VisionIT is a new approach to IT Enterprise management, it's development as a service has been inspired by our experience and customer demands. Over the past few years we have noticed that the cost of ownership of enterprise IT management has got out of kilter with the cost of the infrastructure that it is managing. Companies do not want to spend large proportions of their IT budget on implementing, supporting and managing tools to monitor and report on the status of the infrastructure and the applications that are being used.

We know this because we have been selling and supporting such tools for 14 years.

Most customers want a simple view of whether or not they are going to have a good day or a bad day and the tools to respond to, diagnose and account for performance, availability and value. VisionIT is a subscription service designed and built to deliver a flexible, low cost IT monitoring solution that is easy to deploy, easy to administer and cheap to own.

Based either in our datacentre or on site within your network as a management appliance, VisionIT provides a comprehensive management suite based upon a number of common and widely adopted Open Source tools configured and managed for you to deliver efficient management at a dramatically lower cost.

How is it priced?
The pricing for VisionIT is based on a per node per month structure. There is no tiering, you have access to everything from day 1. There are some future options and some options to do with set up and development but we are trying to keep it as simple as possible. Initial contract is for a minimum of 50 nodes and we have targeted the pricing so that you could save 50% of your annual software support bill.

How does it compare to Enterprise Management tools such as BMC or CA?
What we have found over many years is that the vast majority of customers who own an enterprise tool such as BMC or CA do not use anything like all the functionality that is available to them. What we have done is identify the core functionality that is most commonly used every day and deliver that in a way that is simple to use but at the same time sufficiently detailed enough to get the job of enterprise monitoring done.

What is it based on?
VisionIT has at its core a number of Open Source tools that are very common and in broad use. We have been watching the Open Source market for years and the tools, in their basic forms have matured enough to make them usable and reliable. However the cost of ownership for many companies is high, you need a broad range of skills and a number of specialists to really make the most of them.

Why are you launching this now?
We have been working on this platform for 18 months. We are now ready, the service is ready, and we believe the market is ready. We are bringing a platform to our customers that can save them money and improve efficiency.

Is it Secure?
Yes – VisionIT uses a single port (SSL) Agent to management server communication. During auto discovery respective nodes are probed by default by an nmap TCP port scan and for SNMP response. All communication is encrypted over a single port.

Can I have it on site?
Yes – you have the option for an on site appliance that can sit within your network and operate in exactly the same way. This has a slightly higher setup cost to cover the additional device configuration

How do I add nodes and is there a minimum number of nodes and can I add at any time? Simply log a request via the Partners in IT VisionIT self service portal and we will make the change for you. You can add as many or as few nodes as you wish but contractually we can add in a minimum number of 10 nodes.

Can I buy the software?
No we can’t sell the software, it is based on a core set of Open Source tools and although in theory we can distribute it we are delivering VisionIT as a service.

Can I do the admin myself?
The service is designed so that the burden of administration is taken away. VisionIT is designed as role based so that we can open up some degree of administration but what we have found is that generally customers want to be experts in the services and applications that they run rather than the tools that are used to monitor them.

Are the servers tiered?
No – it is one price regardless of the server type, operating system or configuration of server.

I already use OpenSource - what can you offer me?
We can provide you support, we can take over ownership of your platform or we can help migrate over to VisionIT. With any of these options we can probably save you money and time.

Can’t I just build this myself from Open Source, it’s free!
Yes of course, we’ll even tell you what tools we used. However there is a big downside, namely that you will need a varity of skills and quite a lot of time. It has taken us a considerable amount of time to get VisionIT built, tested, configured and ready for use. These skills do not necessarily sit comfortably in many organisations and you will need them for the long term. Free software is anything but free.
